Literally: Sing like a saucepan

Best equivalent: Sing out of tune

The expression likely comes from the banging of pans against each other, creating a loud unpleasant sound.

See you tomorrow for the letter D, part of the A to Z Challenge!

  1. I think that one could be applied to me.

    • To me as well. At least, according to my kids who’ve heard me in the car on our countless school rides:)
What matters when we sing is the heart, right?

      • That’s what they used to say in our church when I was growing up. On the other hand, they never did ask me to join the choir.

  2. Thank you, Eveline 🙂

    • De rien! Pour faire le challenge ou parler de chanter comme une casserole?
Je ne me cache pas de chanter comme une et cela ne m’empêche pas de chanter quand même 🙂
A plus tard, France et merci de ta visite.

  3. My first reaction, Evelyne was singing saucily. The I learned I was wrong. 🙂 Is there another phase to ‘whistle like a teakettle?’ –Curt

  4. I guess you have non-melodic pots?

  5. Oh, it Italian it sounds like, to be as atuned as a bell. Which I always think should be a good thing… but it isn’t. But I suppose it’s because bells can’t be atuned.

    • That’s a good comparison too. There is at least a French expression with the noun bells.
Se faire sonner les cloches, which is used when someone is harshly reprimanded.

  6. haha. I think the equivalent would be someone who can’t carry a tune in a bucket. It seems that many French expressions come from the kitchen!

    • Good point! Originally I wanted to pick expressions related to food. I gathered quite a few but not one per letter. The second most popular is body parts. Again, not 26:)
Thank you so much for stopping by. I don’t think you’re doing the challenge this year, right?

      • I love the expressions! I will remind my French classmates to read them as well! I decided not to do the challenge this time. I just didn’t have ant ideas for it.

  7. This is a fun one. I picture not just out of tune, but with gusto!

  8. That’s right:)
Thank you for stopping by, Anne.

  9. My teakettle whistles most piercingly but I must listen more closely to my pots and pans!
