The Goncourt and Me

Yesterday, Michel Houellebecq received the Goncourt, the prestigious French literary award for his latest novel La Carte et le Territoire.
When I married his son, each November my father-in-law gave me the book which had been honored with the Goncourt.
It is because I share something in common with the Goncourt…

On November 19, 1990, my husband invited me to dinner.
It was at an extraordinary restaurant. And the circumstances were also extraordinary.
We had dinner at Drouant, one of the best restaurants in France.
It was to celebrate my birthday.
It was a few days before my husband left for the USA and a month before I joined him.
It was also the day the Goncourt had been awarded as it has been every year since 1903 at Drouant.

My father-in-law has passed away and this year it is my husband who gave me a copy of Michel Houellebecq’s novel.
In addition he gave me a detailed review of the lunch menu the jury enjoyed at Drouant as they selected the latest Goncourt recipient. Elaborate and succulent menu for a restaurant I will never forget.

Told you that the Goncourt and I share something special.
